Hotel Nelligan Rooftop Wedding in Old Montreal

rooftop ceremony at Hotel Nelligan in Montreal

Picture this: you’re standing with your partner on a gorgeous rooftop, surrounded by the enchanting cityscape of Old Montreal. All your favourite people are there to celebrate with you, and as you exchange vows, the historic charm of the Nelligan Hotel serves as the perfect backdrop.

That’s precisely what Tanya & Philippe did when they got married, and we’re excited to share their story and beautiful photographs, taken by the fabulous Betina Abrao, with you.

Why did you choose Hotel Nelligan?
We decided to go with the Nelligan Hotel in Old Montreal. We loved the location, the rooftop ceremony cocktail option, as well as the food and service!

Did you hire an event planner?
One of the reasons we decided to go with the Nelligan Hotel is because they offered a wedding coordinator to help us. Although I am a planner myself (project manager), I did not want to stress about any details the day of my wedding.

How did you meet, how did you become engaged, and how long had you been engaged before your wedding day?
My husband and I met on a dating website in 2011. After a few dates, he told me that he loved me, and although I was skeptical at first, the rest was history! As much as he knew I was the one, he still waited a whole five years before asking me to marry him.

Who designed your dress, and where did you purchase it?
I knew exactly which dress I wanted for my wedding day. It was a Hayley Paige dress which they did not carry in Montreal. Prior to driving to White Satin in Ottawa, I tried a few dresses at a local bridal store in Old Montreal, and that visit confirmed that I needed my long-sleeve Hayley Paige gown.

What made you choose this dress? What did you love about it?
I loved the long sleeves and open back. The details on the bodice and the simplicity, yet princess feel of the voile bottom half. The dress had a more warm feel to it which pairs well with my bronze skin.

Who was your photographer?
Betina Abrao
! She really knows how to capture the essence of the moment. All her photos were natural, and even though some of your wedding pictures have to be “staged,” she was able to make us feel at ease. My wedding pictures are my favourite part of my wedding (other than marrying the love of my life).

Who was your videographer, and where can we see your video?
I don’t think that the company still exists, but we used Grey Sparrow. Our video is on Vimeo

Who was your hair and makeup artist?
My hairstylist was Sabrina from J’aime Coiffure. My makeup artists were long-time friends and amazing artists, Sophie Parrot and Linda Rusich.

Who designed the groom’s suit?
None other than Waxman.

Who was your florist, and why did you choose them?
Charlotte Lefebvre. My best friend got married the year prior to me, and we went to see her. I loved her work and passion for what she does. My friend decided to use a different florist, but I knew that I was going to consult her for my wedding. She delivered exactly what I had envisioned. A true artist and a professional in the industry!

Who made your wedding cake, and why did you choose them?
I always get my cakes at Dolce Piu. I wanted something simple with some added flowers to match the rest of my decor. Our cake was beautiful and was extra moist!

What entertainment did you have at your wedding?
We had a DJ, Pat Boogie, and one of my good friends was the MC. We also had Marco, a tam-tam player, and his dancers. Lastly, we had the Mirmir photobooth. This was really a hit as everyone got to leave the wedding with beautiful pictures.

Who designed your stationery?
We used Minted.com.

How did you style the venue?
The reception hall at the Nelligan was already beautiful. The only decor we added were the centrepieces with greenery and some candles. We also added some string lights on one of the walls.

Who accompanied you down the aisle?
The first man of my life, my stepfather! It was a very emotional moment for the both of us.

What song did you walk down the aisle to?
One of my favourite singers of all time—Mariah Carey, singing “Hero.”

Would you like to share anything about your vows? Did you tailor your own vows?
I am really shy, so being a bride and having the spotlight on me all day was enough.

Did you use a celebrant to officiate your wedding?
We had a celebrant. Unfortunately, the one I really wanted ended up double-booking himself and couldn’t make it to our wedding. He referred us to another person who did the job just fine.

Did you choose a ‘first dance’ track?
Alicia Keys – “If I Ain’t Got You.”

What was your favourite part of the day, and would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I have a favourite part of the day. The day, in general, was my favourite part. It was filled with love, emotions, and fun! I would do it all again with no changes.

Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be planning her wedding?
I would say: Do what you and your future husband want to do. Do not let other opinions or fear of being judged by others determine how you will plan your wedding. Be true to yourself, and do not sweat the small stuff.

Great advice!

Thanks a lot to Tanya & Philippe for sharing their wedding with us. Thanks also to Betina Abrao for the wedding photos.
